MENA Newswire News Desk: Austria is on track to break its all-time tourism record, with 115.6 million overnight stays recorded so far this year. This figure surpasses the previous record set in 2019 and indicates a significant recovery in the country’s tourism sector following the COVID-19 pandemic. According to the Austrian Federal Statistical Office, the number of overnight stays during the first eight months of 2024 exceeded the previous record of 115.3 million stays set during the same period in 2019. The Director General of Statistics Austria, Tobias Thomas, highlighted that this year’s figures are the highest ever for this timeframe.

Tourism in Austria saw a particularly strong performance in August, the peak month for summer visitors. The month registered a 9.6 percent increase in tourists, reaching 6.1 million visitors. Overnight stays also rose by 3 percent in August compared to the same month last year, exceeding 21 million. Thomas emphasized the significance of these numbers, noting that Austria’s tourism industry has not only rebounded but is now poised to set new records. “This is the highest number of overnight stays ever recorded for the first eight months of the year,” he said.

Austria, known for its scenic alpine landscapes, historic cities, and cultural attractions, has been a popular destination for international tourists. The country has steadily recovered from the tourism downturn caused by the pandemic, with recent figures signaling a full return to pre-pandemic levels. The surge in tourism this year is partly attributed to relaxed travel restrictions and renewed confidence among travelers. The 115.6 million overnight stays recorded by the end of August point toward Austria reaching unprecedented levels in tourism for 2024. The strong performance of Austria’s tourism sector is expected to continue through the end of the year, potentially setting a new annual record.
